Volunteers needed for after-school program

HOPE Services Hawaii seeks volunteers for its after-school program at Na Kahua Hale O Ulu Wini in Kailua-Kona.

Play Spaces runs from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday during the school year. The program provides the children at Ulu Wini with free homework assistance.

Once fully staffed, HOPE plans to add recreational activities and Friday afternoons to the program.

Park master plan to
be aired Thursday

The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation invites the public to attend a Kealakehe Regional Park Master Plan public information meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the West Hawaii Civic Center’s Building G, Community Meeting Hale, 74-5044 Ane Keohokalole Highway, Kailua-Kona. The department is preparing a master plan for a new regional park on a 190-acre site in Kealakehe. The planning effort will develop a comprehensive vision for the future development of the Kealakehe Regional Park over the next 20 years.

The planning process will be discussed and the public will be asked for input on what recreational activities and land uses should be at the park. This will be the first of three planned public meetings/workshops.

Camera club to
meet in Waimea

The Kona Camera Club will meet Thursday in Waimea. Visitors are welcome.

The monthly show-and-tell will include discussions and demonstrations on HDR photography.

Marriage seminar slated Oct. 5, 6

Island Faith Center will hold an Art of Marriage seminar from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 5 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 6. This six-session video seminar includes expert teaching, personal testimonies and time for interaction. A seminar notebook, pupu and lunch are included.

Cop On Top benefits Special Olympics

The Hawaii Police Department will reach new heights Friday through Sunday to support Special Olympics West Hawaii, a year-round program dedicated to helping children and adults with intellectual disabilities improve their quality of life through sports.

For Cop On Top, local police officers will spend Friday through Sunday in the air on scaffolding at the Walmart on Henry Street in Kailua-Kona. They will rally support and drop buckets below to those passing by for donations to Special Olympics.

All funds raised will stay in West Hawaii to be used for the local Special Olympics program and its athletes. Cop On Top is the organization’s biggest fundraiser of the year.

Special Olympics West Hawaii teams compete in area games on the Big Island and Maui in order to qualify for the State Games on Oahu, where Special Olympics teams compete for medals.
